Water taxi to the Saddle Trail
The short, steep way to Grewingk Glacier. 2 miles to the lake and a big saddle-pass view of Kachemak Bay behind you.
The trip
We drop you at the Saddle Trailhead beach and pick you up at the same beach. The trail climbs about 850 feet in the first mile through spruce forest, tops out at a broad saddle with views back across Kachemak Bay to Homer, then drops another mile to the Grewingk Glacier Lake shore.
The classic loop
Most hikers do this trail as part of the Grewingk loop: water-taxi drop at Glacier Spit, hike 3.2 miles in along the flat coastal trail, exit via Saddle Trail for the ~2-mile climb-and-descend out to the pickup beach. Total distance 5.2 miles. Timing guide.
Alone or as a shorter alternative
If you don’t want the full loop, Saddle Trail alone is the fastest way to see Grewingk Glacier and its lake — about 2 miles each way. Steeper than Glacier Spit but half the mileage.

How much is the water taxi to Saddle Trail?
$85 round trip. $42.50 each way. Same flat rate as every other Inlet Adventures destination. Children under 12 are $65 round trip. Pets ride free.
Which is better — Glacier Spit or Saddle Trail?
For most people we recommend starting at Glacier Spit and exiting Saddle Trail. It’s the more gradual ascent and shorter descent. Saddle-only is best for hikers short on time or who prefer a steeper, more direct route.
Is the Saddle Trail well-marked?
Yes. Kachemak Bay State Park maintains signposts and clear tread. There’s one prominent trail junction at the saddle.
Can I do the Saddle Trail with kids?
The 850-foot climb is real. Kids 10+ with hiking experience are usually fine. For younger kids we recommend the Glacier Spit route.
How long should I book on shore?
Saddle-only round trip: 3–4 hours is comfortable. Full loop: 4.5–6 hours. Our scheduled runs are 1.5 hours apart.
